FILM TECHNIQUES - GO TO THIS PAGE
Project Brief:
Your challenge over the next 6 weeks is to create a documentary style film of no more than 3 minutes, alongside a series of photoshoots and still imagery.
-
Consider the concepts of Home, Place and Memory within Photography.
Documenting places:
-
Consider your surroundings, where you live, work and go to college. You could document the journeys you go on to get to different places, public transport, walking, driving and the conversations you have along the way.
Documenting people: -
Consider your parents and grandparents occupations and where they come from and how their lives intertwine with yours. How has your identity been influenced by the place you live, the friends you have, the music/podcasts you listen to, the programmes you watch, the social media platforms you use and the experiences you've had?
Documenting Local Issues: -
You can think about this on a local scale and consider what it means to live in Cornwall with it's traditions, urban legends, local history and places of interest or you can look at the bigger picture of what it means to you at the moment to be British.
Documenting Global issues: -
This could be your chance to explore perspectives you are passionate about, Politics, Feminism, Equality and opportunities, Education, Climate Change, Fast Fashion and it's effect on the climate, Erosion, Online shopping and it's effects on local high streets, Lockdown and it's effect on people's mental health, anything that interests you.
Ultimately this will become a highly personal response and should explore people, places, events, traditions and the environment, visually, through still and moving image.

Cinematographers
Sean Tucker
Sean Tucker uses a simplistic, but cinematic approach to his videos and has a really good YouTube section on how he completes his own videos for YouTube. Within these there are some really good examples of B-Roll and the benefits of using such a technique.

Peter McKinnon
Peter McKinnon is known for his B-Roll and ability to captivate an audience. His film 'The Bowl' is definitely recommended and is an effective way of telling a story. He also had a whole host of tutorials on shooting and editing film that are where I myself have learnt a lot of what I know.

Ben Blennerhassett
Fantastic film maker that has worked on commercial projects, music videos and Netflix in his time. 'Home' is a really good depiction of his own home and may be useful when it comes to producing related work in lockdown. Fantastic use of colour palettes and contrast, as well as cinematic B-Roll. Also worth checking out some of his other film work.

Danny Bonnar
Created a short film, at home in Scotland, called 'Lockdown Baby' during lockdown that uses a voice over and cinematic imagery to show the highlights and struggles of raising a child during the COVID-19 Pandemic. Really worth a watch and is an effective way of creating mood and drawing the audience in to his own personal story.

Gregor Petrikovic
Created a short film about a dancer during the pandemic that is trapped within the walls of their home, but really just wants to dance. Focusses on the story behind the film itself and shows an aspect of lockdown we are all experiencing; the want to do something we love. Uses cinematic footage and a use of 'home style' footage to show a personal view.

Created a short film documentary about Mrs Birk, a Japanese native, and her decision to learn British cuisine and most importantly, the Sunday Roast. This uses a very natural feeling set of camera techniques that give the mood of 'Home'. This is a very effective way of using a voiceover and subtitles to guide the audience through the story.

Tom Seal
Film made during the first lockdown about Murph the Dog's experience. This is not only a change for us, but also our pets that have had to adapt very quickly to a completely different routine. This uses cinematic footage, close ups and emotion to tell the story of Murph. Tom has worked for BBC, Sky, Universal, MTV, Discovery Channel etc.
