The Pathway Stage

Unit 4 - Personal Preparation
Unit 5 - Information and Interpretation
Unit 6 - Combined Experimental Studies
Unit 7
 - Media Development

Your overall task is to create a fully researched and experimented project, through a medium of your choice.

This is your chance to not be limited, fully using everything we have on offer within the unit.

You will write up an intention, in 200 words, stating what area you would like to investigate, how you are going to do so and any artists you would like to research. Think back to your workshops that you completed within the first stage as you will incorporate some of these into your final work.

Think carefully about how you are going to display your work as this will be presented at the end of the project.

There will be an interim assessment halfway through the term, so be prepared to show some work in progress.

You will present your work to the rest of the class, using some of the Year 1 students, to show your progress and gather some constructive feedback, at the end of the pathway stage.

You need to complete:

  • 10 pages of artist research

  • Response and Experimentation to research

  • Evidence of development with a media of choice.

  • A final piece that consists of a series of images, installation, film, animation, or a series of printed designs.

  • A portfolio of work that matches your pathway of choice.

  • Evaluation of your work, presented at the end of the portfolio

200 Word Plan

  • How you are going to start this project?

  • What theme/direction you intent to go in?

  • Which artists are you going to research?

  • What primary research will you be investigating?

  • How do you in-vision your final pieces to look?

Potential Ideas...Where to start?

- Try a mind map - Get all your ideas down on a page
- Head to websites such as Behance, Pinterest, Dribble, Instagram and understand what others in the industry are doing
- Think about what you are going to create for your final piece, what medium would you like to explore?

Your Idea...Some Potential Starting Points to get you thinking

Moving Image/Film

What will your film be about and how are you going to show this?
You could use 360 cameras and input the film into VR to give a personal experience.
A cinematic style film, following the use of fast and slow motion scenes.
This could then be projected within an installation to give a 4D experience.

Merchandising

Focussing on the connotations of Power and Control (as found in the first stage), this could be presented through the use of a brand.
Clothing using the heat press, cap press, Cricut, embroidery etc.
This brand can be advertised through uses of animation, logo/graphic design, photoshoots of the finished products and a small film.

Photobook/series of images

You could aim to create a series of images that explore one word based on a personal experience.
These could then be mapped to a place or location with Metashape and the use of a drone.
An OBJ file could then be created to explore the location in real time and your photoshoots can act as place markers.

Audio/Podcast

Using audio to explore a theme and create a version of a podcast, either static or interactive. You could aim to produce a spacial audio, using VR to simulate a dark room to fully engage with the sounds.
The audio experience could also be set up within a studio to fully appreciate how people react to sounds.

These two examples, may be really useful for understanding what is possible in the world of design.
They specifically relate to a magazine and logo design.
The logo design book isa fantastic resource for understanding the process of logo design that may be used for Merchandise of Branding of any kind.
